How much water storage do you need?

Owning a rainwater tank and collecting rainwater is a great way to get a backup of free water

Depending on the quantity of water your tank can hold and how often it rains in your area will give you options regarding what you can do with it

Connecting a pump to your tank means you can transfer water to your house or garden or both, easily and or automatically

If your tank is not sufficiently large enough to last until the next rain, it might be helpful to install an automatic changeover switch that will change the water source from tank water to mains water when the tank becomes empty. Really helpful if someone is in the shower when the tank runs out of water!

If you want to use the rainwater for your garden and your house you may want to consider a couple of 22,500L (5000Gallon) tanks as a start, this may be enough but obviously it depends on the rainfall and the quantity of water needed.

If you only want a tank to service a toilet (In some areas this is required by the council as part of the planing and development) then a smaller tank will may do the job

The area available to put the tank will sometimes dictate the size of the tank. In this case it is recommended that the biggest tank that will fit the available area will be the most appropriate
